WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG — which should I pick?

PNG for anything with transparency, text, or flat colour: logos, icons, screenshots, stickers. JPG for photos, where it gives a far smaller file with no visible difference.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. PNG supports full transparency, so every transparent and semi-transparent pixel in the WebP comes through unchanged.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses far more efficiently, and a lossy WebP is being expanded into lossless PNG. The picture gets neither better nor worse — it just takes more bytes to store.
