Add page numbers to a PDF.

Reports, theses and bundles of scanned documents are far easier to discuss when every page has a number. Choose where it goes and how it reads, and the numbers are written straight onto each page.

  • Numbers are added in your browser — the PDF is never uploaded
  • Real text, placed right even on sideways-rotated pages
  • Pick the corner, the style, the first number — or skip the cover

How it works.

  1. 1Drop a PDF into the box above.
  2. 2Pick the position, the style — 1, Page 1, 1 of 12 — and the text size.
  3. 3Change the starting number if you need to, or leave the cover page unnumbered.
  4. 4Tap Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does adding page numbers change the rest of the PDF?

No. The numbers are added as a thin layer of text on top of each page; the existing text, images and links are left exactly as they were, and nothing is re-compressed.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set Start at to any number — handy when this PDF is chapter three of a longer document, or when an appendix should carry on from the main report.

How do I keep the cover page unnumbered?

Tick “Leave the first page (the cover) unnumbered”. Numbering then begins on page two, starting from whatever number you set — so a report can open with a cover and begin at 1 on its first real page.

Some of my pages are sideways. Where will the number go?

Where you would expect it. Pages saved in landscape or rotated inside the PDF are handled as they appear on screen, so “bottom centre” lands at the bottom of the page you actually see, reading the right way up.
