Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No, and no converter can. The JPG’s compression is already baked into the pixels; PNG keeps the image exactly as it is now. What PNG does is stop any further loss, which is why it is the right format to hold while you edit.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than my JPG?
PNG is lossless, and photos are the hardest thing to store losslessly — expect the file to grow three to ten times. If you need a small file for an upload, stay with JPG or use the compressor instead.
Does the PNG get a transparent background?
Not by itself. A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the background stays exactly as it was. PNG simply makes transparency possible if you edit the image afterwards.
